West Somerset Railway

Postby TheThing on Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:48 pm

Stayed with some relatives in a place called Holford, Somerset last week and took a trip on the West Somerset Railway. Just went from Williton to Minehead and back again, but had a great time!

On the way out, we travelled in a diesel railcar - couldn't find a number on it - but it was a good trip, although a bit crowded. Steam on the way back the 2-8-0 GWR Mogul 9351. Absolutley superb!

Must say that the whole railway seems very well run and supported. All the trains were exactly on time and there was plenty of oppotunity to take photos at both ends and all along the route.

Looking forward to riding again in the near future.

I spent a day at the WSR last month for their steam gala and it was absolutely brilliant. Braunton was operational and they also had the N7 running apart from a wealth of other classes. However my biggest surprise was a USATC S160 a class I never really knew about before but a true bit of yankee engineering. Pleased to say the turntable was operational too. Good day and I will try to put some pics on here if I can find how to do it.

Some pics would be great cliff, especially if you have any of their new turntable. :)

Here is how to post pictures:

You will need a photobucket account.

Way back in 1974 when the WSR was struggling to get going, I was at Butlins )Minehead) and bought several sleepers @ 1.00 each. I have the certificate somewhere. I have since been back several times and it is a well run railway, clean ontime etc. One of the good ones.

I'll try and dig out some of the photographs I

I have been a Shareholder since 1976 and get the offer to travel free on here twice a year if I wish, but have done so just twice since. At some 23 miles long, I know it costs money to operate, so now when I am that way, I pay my way by saying nothing about it.

What a tremendous pity though that no television company has offered to use it to film another series like that of 'The Flockton Flyer' that many of us got to enjoy some years ago?
Unless you are authorised to be there, or on a train, keep Off of railway tracks.

Hi all.
Thanks to Jake for link and hopefully below are thumbnails of my pics of the Minehead turntable in use on the Friday of their recent steam gala. It was pouring with rain and hail at the time hence we were all crowding under the platform canopy but hope you get the drift. If this works okay I will put some other pics taken same day in better weather.

Why are they called thumbnails - they look pretty big on my screen - has this old codger done it wrong?

Hi again
A couple of shots of the exGE N7. Strange site deep in GW territory. I last saw it about 15 years ago running specials between Marks Tey and Sudbury and I travelled behind it on an idling DMU.

Sorry these are big shots but I am unhappy about folks being able to access my album from thumbnail clicks. This is undoubtedly down to my lack of experience but will resolve eventually I hope. But in meantime I would like to share a few of my shots with all here.

:D :D Hi again
Thanks for the info - I was new to this and pleased to know my private "album" is not freely open to all.

Nice pictures! The turntable looks superb! :D Great shots ;)

I can acess your album when I click your pics, but all I can see are the 30 images of the WSR. If you prefer you can just do the bigger pics if it helps.
