Slaitham update

Postby will on Wed Jul 09, 2008 9:50 pm

AS it is my 1000th post :lol: I thought I should give an update of what has been happening.

Firstly, I have been buying a few bit and bobs. I have got some plasticard which was in a pack of 8 A4 sheets (2 sheets of every 0.5mm thickness up to 2mm). I have also bought a roll of cork for the roadways, a 21 pin decoder for my 37 and a Rusty Rails Painter set (I will have to remember to do a review!).

All the point motor holes were marked out and the track pulled up, the majority were drilled through but the drill ran out of charge so the rest still need to be done. Now that the holes are in, there is no pressure to buy point motors first - I am doubtig whether I will get any but that is yet to come.

Some cork has been cut out to the right shape along with plasticard and I have done some plans and measured wood out for the station area. When my rail painter arrives, I shall get on with painting but it should only take 2 nights or less (then I will no longer need it! Seems extravagant but it would take forever to paint 100+ yards of rail.)

After the rails are painted, it is time for basic wiring, ballasting and scenery but I still have not finished all of my depot kits!

Here are some pictures;

Not had an update for quite some time now. I have not realy made much progress over the last 4 or 5 months but recently, I started to get back into the rythem of building the layout. All of the track has been painted (viewable side - the other side will be done when I have got other thinkgs done). The large engine shed roof has been made into two parts which I hope to do stick together later tonight. Plasticard road templates have been cut and I dont know whether I will be painting them with textured paints or using scalescenes tarmac. Depends on money available, it doesn't grow on trees! Today, I have been to the hardware shop. Had a good root through all the bits and bobs boxes :lol: and got the things I needed for the Station.

As ou can see, it is not finished but I have sawn the 6mm ply into 2 sections and fixed the straight parts in. They are screwed into the baseboard with right angle joint things with nuts and bolts through them to hold them upright. Hope you get the jist. The platform edging was glued and the plasticard was cut the the right shape - it is not very goos but I am going to tidy it up. The picture above shows a general view of how I would like it to look. There will be a Hornby Bus Stop Shelter and 2 Street Lights with station name signs on. The ballasting will be done tonight in that area and I want to paint the platform top as soon as possible. Te bare wood will be covered in brick paper to look like the station is set below the hight of street and the the surrounding level (a good excuse to hide the line running around the station!). the steps leading down from the road bridge will be bought at some point and the road will have some street lights on and a bit of the bus stop and large pavement at one side. So the bridge will be a / | shape. Sorry if my explanations and diagrams mean nothing to you.

Ballasting has also been started. I know that you should make sure al the electrics work before you start on scenery but I need a few things before I can start the electrics. i am going to try and get some wire from my club for droppers and then i can wire my bus! That will be a relief when that is done. you may be wondering how I will solder my droppers over painted track, well, I wondered that aswell. But, I scrubbed away the paint where the holes are drilled for the droppers. Stupid, I know. So, here are a few pictures of the part ballasted layout.

I think your doing great. I am always slow at starting to ballast because its slow and boring, but when you get started things improve, and when you look back when a section is done its an acheivment. My worst problem has been that I have had three sets of points fail, some months after I had ballasted them, but when I got started at them it is not too bad a job to remove the ballast and get the points out and replace with new. You are making much better progress than me. Keep it up and it will give me some inspiration to pull my finger out and get on.
