Railroad Pullman vs Super Detail Pullman

To celebrate the completion of my railway today, I decided to purchase a couple more coaches, some Pullmans. But my budget only allowed for one of the hyper detail models and one of the budget models, which has lead me to do something I've always wanted to do-a comparison review.
Image
Let's start with the superdetail model. Handrails seperate to the body, printed curtains, pipes on the roof, lit table lamps... Which present a problem on DC layouts-the lights slowly dim as you pull into the station, but they stay light constantly on on a DCC layout.
The couplings on this model don't deal with older couplings well, making it impossible to connect them on corners, and the underframe detail is so fragile, I broke it when taking it out of the box.
Image
The Railroad version, on the other hand, gets over this problem-it has large metal couplings, and basic underframe detail. And basic detail everywhere else. The moulded pipes on the roof look a little dissapointing when paired next to the hyper detail version, and there are no printed curtains on the windows. The window plastic is also a lot clearer-sometimes, it looks as if there is no window plastic at all!The moulded handrails by the door are also not a problem from a distance, but the corridors on the two vehicles are different widths, and the Railroad version has no doors on it.
So which one is best... The super detail version, undoubtly. However, the Railroad version isn't too bad for it's price, and if you're a bit short on cash, then the budget alternitive will do just as well.
Life is like a box of chocolates, so scoff it all while you can... Any more trouble from you, and it's a short sharp visit from the smack fairy!

Its also fair to point out that they represent two quite different Pullman variations. The Super-detail version is the wooden bodied one as used on the likes of the Golden Arrow. The Railroad one on the other hand is the all-steel model used on the LNER routes with say the Queen of Scots. The big giveaway, apart from the smooth sides is the absence of underframe trussing.

The review is a fair one, but I do feel compelled to say that (a) I would have bought the Railroad one anyway, because it was the East Coast version, and (b) since it dismantles easily without running the risk of irreperable damage it was pretty easy to strip it down and paint the ghastly white interior and generally tidy it up.

hi there, a good reveiw, thanks,

i have 9 super detail pullmans and they r superb
6 devon belles and 3 bournemouth belles from the new train pack r2661m, they are lovely,

one thing the railroad brake car correctly has which the super detail does not (why hornby ?????) is the guards' look out window box...
the super detail model omits this but i dont know why as its not prototypical... lord knows why hornby got this wrong !

so i may invest in a railroad brake pullman for this feature,
i also have the golden age models devon belle observation car which is amazing !
