Hornby rolling road

Postby Teleman on Sat Jul 26, 2008 11:25 pm

I know , its a bit boring but i brought one . It was in a mad moment but i'm glad i did . With the yard filling up with diesels its great for giving them a good test on and well worth the £30 price tag
It has also helped me sort out a problem on one of Ryans trains that was making a funny noise , it was the rim on the 'made in China' tender drive James not fitted square .
I know others make then and it would be nice for me if it would do 9 mill gauge to but with a bit of thought it could be done
Anyway they are very good and i would give it a 9/10 because its a bit of a fiddle with moving the rollers and my main moan about it .... they did not tell you that the rollers are powered to that is why i did not buy one before :x

I didn't realise that they were powered! Hattons always have them listed under 'Live Steam' and I always thought they were designed for tender pick-up.

I've got one and use it quite a lot... but you live and learn... 8)

Hornby rolling road later models have rollers that are electrically live. Cat no R8211 I think. On earlier ones, the rollers were not electrically live - cat no R8203 I think. If you are buying extra rollers, there are also different types for each.

The Hornby one is quite a good product, but it is a pity that the rollers opposite each other cannot be moved together. The rolling road cannot be used for long diesels with both bogies powered as the track part gets in the way - although I expect it would be possible to remove the track section and make further modifications to do this.

It was not untill i saw the box with a 0-6-0 running on the rollers i realised that they must be . I wonder how many people don't buy it because they think its only for live steam ?

edit for spelling

I've just put my Pannier 0-6-0 on it and it IS live rollers!

The problems I had trying to get power to 2-6-2, 0-4-0 etc.

Bum!

Thanks for the info Pete. I can really tune ALL my locos now. :D

I saw one of them at the Newton train fair for £30 and it was boxed. It was the really long one that had a bent track that went down for the rollers. It also had a wooden base. Is this the H and M one you were on about?

Yes, I think they are. It looks a very expensive purchase until you realise just what it can do. And no instructions either. Mine came in a factory sealed box so I don't think they were removed.
