How to build light weight tunnels.

Postby old tom on Wed Jan 30, 2008 3:36 pm

Joe asked for some photos of how I built my tunnel so I thought I'd post them on here in case it anyone else finds them useful..

First off, work out exactly where the tunnel will go and use a sheet of paper to mark out the shape you want...

Next, cut out the template and use it to mark out the tunnel roof...

I used hardboard from the back of an old flatpack wardrobe (I never throw any wood away!). It's so thin that it can be cut using a Stanley knife.
The supports are made from bonfire night rocket sticks found in the street and nailed n' glued to the top. The front is made from heavy card and covered with good old Metcalf brick sheets.

After placing all the bits of scenic stuff to hide all the faults, it looks OK.

Thanks for that Tom. It may prove of some help to me. I am going to start building my hill and tunnel soon, so I may adopt that meathod. Also, I really like your steps next to your tunnel. :)

I'm quite chuffed with the steps Jake.. They are scratch built using thick card and brickpaper. I had a spare door and window acetate from a Metcalf house kit so I made use of them. A good spares box is worth a fortune!

Its good to see i'm not the only one that picks up rocket sticks . I built a tunnel for Ryan from two shoe boxies and left him to paint them ! it now has a lake on the top as he wanted to use some blue paint
