Heljan dogfish

Postby BromsMods on Sun Nov 16, 2008 4:42 pm

Just a note of warning, especially for those using DCC systems (although it also applies to those using DC!)- I have just put a dogfish wagon on a piece of test track and it shorts out the system. It looks as though they have used non-insulated wheelsets! I have emailed Heljan and await their reply tomorrow.

Surely that means it will not work on 99% of model railways!

They obviously didn't test the model well enough! If at all!

H BromsRods. I'm assuming you're 00, and it sounds to me as if you've got a rogue wagon there. I've got three 'Dogfish', and have run them quite happily with no problems. If you've just bought this item I'd take or send it back for repair or replacement. I feel that if there were a fault like this, we'd have heard about before now on forums like this one, and the model railway press would certainly have picked it up, the 'Dogfish' has after all been available for some time.
Have a good look at your wagon, and see if you can spot anything that doesn't look right, it may be something simple like a trackpin has been picked up and wedged somewhere causing the problem. It happens, I know!.

No, John. These are the latest dogfish packs that have just been released by Heljan. We're also a supplier (I thought there might have been a clue in my signature!!) - all our packs are the same - and I've heard this am of others who are reporting the same problem.

I understand Heljan are looking at a solution to the problem. More news when available.

Sorry BromsMods. Missed your sig, but thanks for pointing out the bleedin' obvious. I'll have to read things a bit more carefully in future, still my heart's in the right place, I think you'll agree.

Hello again Bromsmods. I was just wondering if you ever got a reply from Heljan about the wheelset problem with their latest issue of the excellent 'Dogfish' hoppers.

I purchased a set of the olive green dogfish wagons a week ago.
After seeing this post I checked mine, each axle set is fitted with an insulated bush.
Checked each axle with a continuity meter and found NO current flow from wheel to wheel.

Could there just be a rogue batch going around.?
